What One Weekend Can Hold

What One Weekend Can Hold

This weekend almost busted at the seams. Or I guess maybe it's just that I almost busted at the seams.

It began Friday night with "Senior Night" and NO, this is not for those over 60, it was the night that footballs and cheerleaders go out onto the field with their parents, and then the school announces our names and everyone claps. Sounds innocent enough, right? Until you -- the Mom -- are standing there with your only daughter, your oldest child, and you realize OH MY GOD, SHE'S A SENIOR. And then you hold in the hysteria. Hold it in until you almost burst. But don't burst because your very cool daughter would be mortified.

Then the next morning -- The Inaugural Suwanee Book Festival. What a blast! The committee did such an amazing job putting together this first event. My buddy, Ad Hudler and I spoke at the main stage and I don't know what the audience thought, but we sure did entertain each other. And as always, he used the word "poopy pants".

Then Ad, Lauretta Hannon (I love this girl) and I spoke at a workshop in the library. The subject was "The many ways to tell a story" and I gotta tell you -- I should've been in the audience because these two KNOW what they are talking about. Biggest reminder for me as a writer: To tell my truth!!! Yes, all good writing tells the truth... Thanks, Lauretta.

I saw my dear friends, Daren Wang, Don O'Briant, Jackie K Cooper, Linda Sands, Haywood Smith, and many others === all of them a constant reminder of the most major perk of writing: the kinship of other writers and readers. Oh, my heart floods.

Oh, and Linda Sands -- thanks for the lemon drops. That's all I have to say about that.

So, nothing (especially this teeny tiny Stop sign) could stop Lauretta and Ad....Nothing, I tell you.

Okay. I'm going to go eat a pound of M&Ms. Sick to have missed all the fun. Dangit.

Her photo captures everything that "pure joy" could never put into words. Your words capture everything behind the photos of our lives...what a contrast of emotions even though it was the same night.

What an amazing photo. Makes a mother's heart soar to see such happiness on a child's face. She's lovely.
